Parts of bugs on fridge shelf, dead bugs on trap: Cumberland County restaurant inspections

The following restaurants in Cumberland County were found to have violated Pennsylvania health and safety regulations during inspections between October 17 and 23.

Inspections are supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture. The ministry notes that in many cases violations are corrected by the restaurant before inspectors leave.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites

— Observed food residue, debris and insect parts on bottom shelf of refrigerator containing soft drinks. The manager corrected the discrepancy by cleaning the bottom shelf.

— The overall condition of the facility was messy with food residue visible on the floor. The manager claims they had a busy lunch hour and they haven’t cleaned it yet. Food residue was also observed on the wall near the trash can where it appears the food handlers throw food into the trash can but hit the wall. This area must be clean to avoid cross-contamination of the food preparation area. In addition, the trash can must have a lid.

–The exterior door at the rear of the facility has an air gap at the lower sill plate which allows pests access into the building. Doors should be sealed to protect the food preparation/serving area.

–A food handler was observed in the food preparation area not wearing the proper hair restraints, such as a hairnet or hat. The manager says he will buy hats for his employees to correct this non-compliance.

–The insect light trap in the back room is correctly placed but saturated with dead insects during the inspection on October 19. The director corrected this discrepancy on October 22 by replacing the glue board with a new unit.
